Hi, I’m Nick!

I am:

★  A descendant of immigrants, starting with my Irish ancestors who came to Montana in the 1890s, then my Polish ancestors who came here in the 1910s, and continuing to my English mother, who came to the US in her mid-twenties, met my Dad, and became a Montana citizen in the early 1980s. My family came here for the American dream, and they found it in Butte, but they still had to fight hard to get honest pay for an honest day’s work.

★  A working-class Montanan whose early childhood was spent living in a rented single-wide trailer with my five siblings, until my parents were finally able to buy a home of their own when I was in middle school. I understand the value of stability and a place to set down roots, which my family has found here in the Lewis & Clark neighborhood of Missoula.

★  A Montana public school kid, the beneficiary of the visionary crafters of the Montana Constitution of 1972, which gave all Montanans the right to a free, quality public education. I’m a proud graduate of Butte High School, and I was able to attend the University of Montana, and later law school, because of Pell Grants, subsidized Stafford student loans, hard work, and the generosity of Montana taxpayers who supported public education in this State.  I’m now a proud parent of kids who attended Lewis & Clark Elementary, Washington Middle School, and Hellgate High School.

★  A builder and expert in real estate and tax law who has spent my entire career here in Montana preserving our historic buildings, developing community housing, and running Main Street Montana businesses.

★  A pragmatic, progressive public servant, who has served in Helena as an appointee of both Governor Brian Schweitzer and Governor Steve Bullock on bipartisan State Boards focused on workforce investment, economic development, and historic preservation.

I am running for Montana House District 93 because:

★  Rising property taxes and the cost of living are hitting working Montanans hard.‍ ‍Montana has changed a lot since the days of the Anaconda Company and the “Copper Collar,” but today it feels like we are sliding back into the bad old days of Montana being a playground for the rich while the working class can barely afford to live. I will use my real estate and tax law expertise to fix our broken tax laws and to create a fair property tax system for all Montanans.

★  Montana’s housing crisis is squeezing Missoula families and workers.‍ ‍I build and preserve housing for a living, and I’ll bring real, practical, experience-driven solutions to Helena.

★  Our workforce and public institutions need champions, not critics.‍ ‍I’ve signed both sides of a paycheck. I know that it takes everyone working together to keep the lights on.

★  We need a government that works for the people again.‍ ‍I know how to navigate complicated legal landscapes and build relationships across the aisle to get things done. I will bring civility, practicality, and a focus on achieving results to Helena.

I’m running because
Montana works best
when we build things together.

Let’s get to work

I was certified as a LEED Accredited Professional from the US Green Building Council in 2009, and my career in historic preservation and community development has been informed by a focus on sustainability and the environment from the very beginning.

My public comments to the MCPS Board of Trustees supporting teachers & students:

A family celebrating a graduation outdoors, with a boy in a red cap and gown, surrounded by two women and a man, all smiling.
A young man in a military cadet uniform holding a Billy Mitchell Award certificate, standing between a woman in striped shirt and a man in a patterned shirt outdoors in a park.
Three people smiling in winter gear and ski helmets on a snowy mountain, with ski lifts and trees in the background.
